Genelec 1031A Biamplified Monitoring System

This site offers surround professionals an opportunity to exchange information, voice their opinions, and get their production questions answered by their peers. This was created for you to discuss issues pertaining to the surround sound revolution.

The Genelec 1031A is a two-way active monitor system consisting of a vented enclosure with a multiple amplifier unit set into the back. The amplifier unit contains a low signal level active crossover, two power amplifiers, and overload protection for each driver. It is designed for nearfield monitoring, broadcast and TV control rooms, mobile vans, home studios, and traveling engineers. Genelec’s Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW ) Technology is used to provide stereo imaging and frequency balance, even in difficult acoustic environments. This is enhanced by the crossover controls, which allow the precise matching of the speaker system to its surroundings, the company says. It is capable of producing peak acoustic levels of over 120 dB SPL at 1 meter. The only connections to the system are the mains supply and the input signal. The 7070A subwoofer is also available from Genelec. For more information, visit www.genelec.com.

PCM AML1
The AML 1 is the first compact active monitor in the PMC stable. The unit features custom drive units and OS-Con capacitors utilized in the key areas of the crossovers and power amplifiers. The AML 1 boasts sub-35 Hz performance from a modern sculpted compact cabinet. The drivers are 165-millimeter carbon fiber and Nomex flat piston for the low frequency, and 34 millimeter PCM soft dome for high. Amplifier power is rated at 100 watts for low frequencies and 80 watts for the highs, RMS. The baffle is available in blue, grey, or white, and the cabinet comes in Neo Black and White finishes. The SB100 matching sub is available as well. For more information, visit www.pcmloudspeaker.com. The units are sold by Bystron (www.bystron.ca) in the U.S.

Adam S3A
The Adam S3A features two woofers: one woofer acts as a full-range driver with the second woofer joining it only below 150 Hz. This unusual approach effectively doubles the area and power of the woofer when it needs to respond to deeper frequencies, the company says. It has three 150-watt amplifiers. It can be used either horizontally or vertically, so that flexible positioning within the studio is possible. The tweeter incorporates the company’s ART technology. The unit works with the company’s Sub1 subwoofer. For more information, visit www.adam-audio.de.

KRK Systems V8
The V8 uses a separate power amplifier for the woofer and tweeter with an electronic crossover so that the power and frequency response is tailored to each transducer. Using the Neutrik Combo connector, the V8 can handle both XLR and .25-inch phone plug inputs, and video shielding is standard. The unit is comprised of a 1-inch silk dome tweeter and an 8-inch woven Kevlar low-frequency driver. Amplification is 60 watts for high frequency and 100 watts for low. Frequency response is 47 Hz to 20 kHz ±2 dB. The S12 sub is compatible with this system. For more information, visit www.KRKsys.com.

ATC SCM20ASL Pro
The ATC SCM20ASL employs a Super Linear magnet in a new version of the 150-millimeter mid/bass drive unit, along with a 25-millimeter tweeter. The active 2-way design incorporates two separate amplifier blocks in each cabinet — 250 watts for bass/mid and 50 watts for high frequencies — and will deliver continuous SPLs of up to 108 dB/1M. A rear-panel selector provides five different LF boost settings, as well as a flat reference setting, tailoring the SCM20ASL Pro’s low end response to different monitoring environments. Universal Omnimount fixings are built into the cabinet for flying or wall mounting. The integral power supply can be switched to 230, 110, or 100A AV. MSRP is $6100/pair. The ATC 1/15 Pro Sub is also available. For more information, visit www.transaudiogroup.com/atc.

SLS S8R
SLS Loudspeakers’ S8R is a nearfield studio monitor with a two-way system and an 8-inch cast frame woofer that’s ported at the rear of the cabinet and crosses over to a PRD500 Neodymium push pull ribbon tweeter. The unit also features an integral phase plug on the woofer, a rotateable waveguide on the ribbon, a passive network with precision air core inductors, and polypropylene capacitors. The S8R speaker can be used vertically or on its side. It will fit in six standard rack spaces. Bracket mounting screws on the rear of the cabinet are provided to facilitate wall mounting. Inputs on the monitor consist of a pair of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected in parallel with external jumpers allowing the user to have the option of bi-wiring or biamping the drivers.
