Southern Tracks Recording upgrades to 5.1
Southern Tracks Recording in Atlanta, Georgia has augmented its SSL 4064G Plus mixing console with a Martinsound MultiMAX multichannel monitor controller in response to record company demand for 5.1 mixes. “We had our first request for a 5.1 mix from a record company several months ago,” reports chief engineer Ryan Williams, “and we’re continuing to get requests, so we want to be prepared.”
“For our first 5.1 session, we needed to make it work without a controller, and did a basic stem mix to a DA-88. After that we had a MultiMAX brought in, tried it and found that it worked great.” MultiMAX offers comprehensive management of multiple surround speaker systems, plus stereo and mono setups. The MultiMAX at Southern Tracks has been used for a number of remix sessions and for live concert mixes, most notably for a recent Rage Against The Machine show. “We’re also getting requests to remix archive albums,” notes Williams, “some of them up to eight years old, for DVD release in DTS format. Now we’re just waiting for the call to remix Dark Side of the Moon!”
Southern Tracks Recording has been involved in the production of albums by Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Bob Dylan, Matthew Sweet, Aerosmith, and Black Crowes and serves as home base for renowned mixer/producer Brendan O’Brien. The single-room facility, built from the ground up in 1983, was the first in the South to install an SSL.
