Fits & Starts Productions Presents 5.1 Miking Experiment at Ex’pression Center for New Media
Ex’pression Center for New Media was the host site for the recent Experiment in Surround Miking Techniques presented by Fits & Starts Productions. This first-of-its-kind event attracted manufacturers, audio engineers and Center students, who participated in the two-day program. Led by noted audio engineer Mike Sokol, the Experiment was conducted by gathering varied surround miking technologies from around the globe under one roof.

Single-point, stereo and 5.1 mics were used over the two days to capture music from a variety of pop music, world percussion and vocal talent, including the well-known House Jacks. The mics included Crown SASS-P and Shure VP88 (stereo); Holophone, Soundfield Mark 5 and SPL ATMOS 5.1 (surround/ambience); and Shure KSM32 and SM81 (single point).

Participants had the rare opportunity to explore different mic placements and technologies in order to ascertain the most effective methods of capturing surround tracks. All music was recorded to TASCAM DA-88 (16-bit) and DA-78 (24-bit) digital recorders. A special demonstration DVD capturing the Experiment is planned for distribution earlier this summer.

“We are so very proud to host this R&D-type of experiment of microphones specifically and appropriately manufactured for 5.1,” said Gary Platt, president of Ex’pression. “Up until recently, 5.1 has been viewed as mostly a mixing option, but this clearly demonstrates the enhancements of actually recording with 5.1 mic systems.”
