New GX Series Amplifier From Hafler Shines at 109th AES Convention; New Fixed Install GX Amps with Cinema-Specific Features One of Three New Amp Lines from Hafler that are All Based on the Same Basic Amplifier Platform
Hafler introduces to the systems contractor market its new fixed install GX amplifier with cinema-specific features at the 109th AES Convention, held from Sept. 22 to 25 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Booth 846. This new amplifier series is the one of three new amp series that are all based on a platform referred to as the C-Series, with differences being in cosmetics, input processing and output capabilities.

“Fixed install sound design contractors have been using the large Hafler amplifiers in their installations for years with excellent results,” says Jerry Cave, managing director for Hafler. “Our new contractor format amplifier has features specific to the cinema industry. Finally, there is now an audiophile quality, reliable, sound choice to perfectly fit the needs of the cinema sound contractor’s installations.”

The Hafler GX Series amp series crossover is designed to meet the needs of a typical cinema Installation in the form of two optional plug-in cards. Features include: 4th order Low-Pass, High-Pass, or Full-Range; 500 or 800 Hz Crossover Frequency; DIP Switch Selectable Time Delay-six positions, 0″ to 30″ of Low-Pass Time Delay; Continuously Variable CD Horn Equalization; and Phase Inversion Switch. In Stereo Mode or Biamp Mode, each amplifier channel is configured independently with its own Cinema Card and Speaker Load setting. In Bridged Mono Mode, both channels are configured with a single Cinema Card, with a Dual or Bridged Mono Output. All of these features can be accessed from the rear panel of the amplifier.

“We have planned three power levels: 300×2, 600×2 and 1200×2,” explains Jim Strickland, vice president of engineering, Rockford Corporation. “The 300 and 600 watt units are a new Class G circuitry based around our patented Trans-nova platform which provides for a very simple gain path for incredible sound quality, as well as high efficiency and lower heat. All are fan cooled. Power is the same regardless of impedance, so the user/installer need not worry about the load.”

Mark Albers, senior design engineer for Hafler, explains, “The 300- and 600-watt units are two rack spaces, and use switching power supplies, surface mount, and MOSFET-as all Hafler amps do. The 1,200-watt unit will likely be three rack spaces high. All will be 115V/230V adaptable.”

Says Cave, “Hafler C-Series amps deliver REAL power without thermal problems*continuously. Plug it in and don’t worry about it. Hafler amplifiers maintain consistent thermal performance at any impedance. The C-Series represents Hafler’s first step to designing and building great sounding, higher powered amplifiers.”
